Side sleeping creates a problem a rectangle cannot solve: your shoulder needs to sit somewhere, and on a standard pillow it either gets squashed underneath or pushes the pillow away from your neck. The Cut-Out keeps Coop's adjustable fill and gusseted edge but removes a section along one side, so the shoulder tucks in and the pillow stays in contact with your neck.

The Deep Dive
Side sleepers often struggle to get their pillow close enough to their neck without their shoulder getting in the way. The Coop Crescent Cut-Out Pillow solves this problem beautifully with a uniquely curved edge that perfectly contours around your shoulder.
Built for Side Sleepers
The curved cut-out provides the necessary shoulder clearance so the pillow can properly support your cervical spine. This eliminates the "bunching" of the pillow and reduces morning stiffness and neck pain.
Fully Adjustable Fill
Just like the Original, the Cut-Out pillow features a zippered cover that lets you add or remove the proprietary cross-cut memory foam and microfiber blend. It arrives slightly overstuffed so you can customize it exactly to your shoulder width.
- Ergonomic Crescent Shape: Perfect contouring for side-sleeping shoulder clearance.
- Includes Extra Fill: Comes with an extra bag of Oomph fill to guarantee you have enough loft.
- Cooling Lulltra Cover: Breathable bamboo-derived fabric keeps you cool all night.
- CertiPUR-US Certified: Rigorously tested for safety and free of harmful chemicals.

Key benefits
What it does well
A place for your shoulder
The recess lets the shoulder sit forward of the pillow rather than under it, so the pillow can stay against your neck.
Adjustable like the Original
Same zip and same cross-cut fill, so the height is still yours to set.
Gusseted edge holds height
A 2" gusset gives the sides a defined wall, which helps the pillow keep its loft where your neck meets it.
Same certifications
CertiPUR-US for the foam itself and GREENGUARD Gold for emissions, as with the rest of the Original range.
The mechanism
How it works
On your side, your head sits roughly a shoulder's width above the mattress — but your shoulder itself is in the way. Press a rectangular pillow down and the shoulder compresses it; pull it clear and there is a gap under your neck.
The cut-out removes material exactly where the shoulder lands. The shoulder moves into the notch, the remaining pillow supports the head and neck, and the gusseted edge stops the sides collapsing under the load.
Because the fill is still adjustable, the shape solves the geometry while the zip solves the height. They are two separate problems, and this pillow is aimed at people who have both.

Best use cases
When it earns its place
You sleep on your side most of the night
This is the position the shape exists for, and the one where a rectangle struggles most.
Your shoulder aches in the morning
If your shoulder is bearing weight under the pillow, a recess that unloads it is a direct fix worth trying.
The Original was close but not quite right
If you liked the adjustability but kept fighting your shoulder, this is the same platform with the geometry changed.
Suitability
Is it right for you?
A good fit if…
Committed side sleepers, particularly anyone whose shoulder aches in the morning or who keeps pulling the pillow forward to make room.
Look elsewhere if…
You sleep mainly on your back or front, you move between positions all night, or you want a pillow that fits ordinary pillowcases without fuss.
Pros and cons
The trade-offs
What works
- Shoulder recess addresses the main problem side sleepers have with rectangular pillows
- Fill is adjustable through a zip, as on the Original
- 2" gusset helps the edge hold its height under load
- CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified
- 100-night trial and five-year warranty
What to weigh up
- The shape only pays off if you genuinely sleep on your side
- Memory foam carries the usual break-in odour and needs airing
- Shredded fill compacts and needs periodic fluffing
- Shaped pillows are more awkward to fit into standard pillowcases
- Costs more than a plain rectangular pillow of the same fill
Practical setup
Getting the most from it
-
Air it before the first night
As with any shredded memory foam, give it a day or two of ventilation to let the break-in smell dissipate.
-
Orient the cut-out toward your shoulders
The notch belongs at the edge nearest the bottom of the bed, so your shoulder drops into it as you settle.
-
Set the fill on your side, not sitting up
Judge the height in the position you actually sleep in — loft that looks right while upright is usually too low once you lie down.
-
Give it several nights
A shaped pillow changes where your weight sits. Expect a short adjustment period before judging it.
The verdict
Our take
This is the Original with its geometry rethought for one job. If you sleep on your side and spend the night negotiating with your shoulder, the recess is a real fix rather than a marketing shape — and keeping the adjustable fill means you can still set the height independently.
The caveat is how specific it is. A shaped pillow rewards a consistent sleeping position and punishes an inconsistent one; if you roll onto your back half the night, the plain Original is the more sensible buy. The usual shredded-foam trade-offs apply here too: a break-in smell, and fill that wants an occasional shake.
We have not found the same depth of independent testing for this variant as for the standard Original, so treat the shared platform as well documented and the shape itself as less independently verified.
Key Features
Shoulder cut-out
Room for the arm underneath
The crescent shape gives the lower shoulder somewhere to go, which is the pinch point side sleepers feel first.
Adjustable fill
Side sleeping needs the most loft
Side sleepers have the largest gap to fill between ear and mattress, and that gap is personal.
Holds its height
No collapse by 3am
Shredded foam keeps its loft where down-alternative flattens, which matters most in the position that demands the most support.
Works with a mattress topper
Adjust as the bed changes
A softer bed means you sink further and need less pillow. Being able to re-tune covers that.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from the standard Original?
The fill, cover and certifications are the same. This version removes a section of the pillow along one edge to create a recess for your shoulder, and adds a 2" gusset. Coop lists it at 18" × 28" (Queen) against the Original's 19" × 29".
Will it work if I sleep on my back too?
It can, but you lose the reason to buy it. The cut-out is designed around the shoulder position you take when lying on your side. If you split your night between positions, the standard Original is the more flexible choice.
Does it fit a normal pillowcase?
Coop lists Queen at 18" × 28" and King at 18" × 34", so standard cases in the matching size generally fit. The shaped edge does not always sit neatly inside a square case.
Is the fill adjustable like the Original?
Yes. It uses the same zip opening and the same cross-cut memory foam and microfiber blend, and ships with extra fill.
Does it come with the same guarantee?
Coop lists a 100-night sleep trial and a five-year warranty across the Original Adjustable collection. Confirm the terms on the listing you buy from.
