A bedside unit that dims through the evening, plays masking sound overnight and brightens before the alarm in the morning. Every one of those jobs can be done by something cheaper. What you are paying for is having them in one object, so there is no longer a reason for a phone to sit within arm's reach of the pillow.

The Deep Dive

What it is really for

Sold as a sunrise alarm, bought as a phone replacement. The alarm is good and the light is good, but the reason to spend this much on a bedside object is that it removes the last argument for keeping a phone next to the bed — and that single change does more for most people's sleep than any of the features on the box.

The morning half

Waking in a dark room is hard because darkness is the signal that keeps melatonin flowing. A sunrise alarm brightens gradually before the sound, so by the time the alarm goes off your brain has already begun the transition. The difference is most noticeable in winter, when a 6:30am alarm arrives two hours before any daylight.

It does not make you a morning person. It makes the first ten minutes less brutal, which is enough to stop the snooze cycle if you also get out from under the covers and open the curtains.

The evening half

The wind-down routine dims the light on a schedule. This is genuinely useful and also the part people stop using, because a routine is only as good as your willingness to start it at the same time each night. Set it to something you would do on your worst evening rather than your best one.

Where it is beaten

On sound, by any mechanical white-noise machine — a real fan cannot loop and a speaker can. On light, by a dedicated wake-up light with a wider brightness range. On price, by a cheap alarm clock and a separate sound machine, which together cost less and do each job at least as well.

It wins on being one object with one plug, and on being pleasant enough to want on a nightstand. Whether that is worth the premium is a question about your bedroom, not about the technology.

  • Routines make the wind-down cue automatic

Key Features

Sunrise before sound

Light arrives before the alarm does

Brightening gradually ahead of the sound works with the mechanism that actually wakes you, instead of startling you out of whatever stage you were in.

A reason to move the phone

The change that matters most

Most evening-routine advice fails at one point: the phone is the alarm. A standalone device removes that objection entirely.

Evening dimming

The runway, not just the landing

A configurable wind-down means the light in the room drops on a schedule rather than when you remember to do it.

One object, four jobs

Fewer things on the nightstand

Light, alarm, sound and routine in one unit — the argument is consolidation rather than any single feature being best in class.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Hatch Restore 3 need a subscription?

The core functions — alarm, sunrise, dimming light and sound — work without one. The subscription adds a library of sleep and meditation content. Decide whether you want that library before you buy, because it is a recurring cost on top of the device.

Is a sunrise alarm actually better than a normal one?

It works with your biology rather than against it. Light is what stops melatonin production, so brightening before the sound gives your brain a head start on waking. On a dark winter morning, waking to sound alone in a black room is the hardest version of the task.

Can it replace my phone as an alarm?

That is the strongest reason to buy one. A standalone alarm is what makes it possible to charge the phone in another room, which is the single highest-impact change in most people's evening routine and the hardest to do while the phone is still your alarm clock.

Is it good enough as a white-noise machine on its own?

For general background masking, yes. A dedicated mechanical machine produces a richer sound with no possibility of a loop, so if noise is your main problem the Hatch is a compromise. If noise is a secondary problem, it saves you a second device.
