A sensor strip that goes under the mattress and reads heart rate, breathing and movement through it. You put it there once and then forget it exists, which removes the failure mode every wearable shares: the nights it was on the charger, or in a drawer because you were sick of it.

The Deep Dive

The compliance problem it solves

Every comparison of tracker accuracy is downstream of a question nobody measures: how many nights actually got recorded. Rings and watches lose nights to charging, to travel, to irritation, and eventually to boredom. A sensor under the mattress loses none, because using it requires nothing of you after the first five minutes.

For a large number of people that is worth more than a more accurate device they would wear four nights a week.

What it is good at

Timing and consistency. When you actually went to sleep versus when you got into bed, how much the two differ at weekends, whether a late meal or a late session at the gym shows up as a restless first half. Those patterns are visible across a fortnight and they are the ones you can act on.

What it is not good at

Sleep stages, in common with every consumer device. It also cannot follow you — travel, a spare room, or a night at someone else's flat are simply missing. And on a very thick or very firm mattress the signal it has to work with is weaker.

Where the honest line is

It is a wellness device. Breathing disturbance counts are an observation about your night, not a clinical finding, and no amount of data from under a mattress can rule out a sleep disorder. If the numbers worry you, the useful next step is a doctor, not a better tracker.

Pros and cons

The trade-offs

What works

  • Nothing worn and nothing to charge nightly

  • Automatic - no button to remember

What to weigh up

  • Only works on the bed it is installed under
  • One sleeper per mat
  • No daytime metrics at all

Key Features

Nothing worn

Removes the reason people quit

The most accurate tracker is the one still recording in week six. A sensor you cannot feel has no nights off.

Set once

Under the mattress, then forget it

No charging, no pairing each night, no strap. It is installed rather than used.

Breathing disturbances

A signal worth noticing

Reported as an observation, not a diagnosis — but a persistent pattern is a reasonable prompt to talk to a doctor.

Works with any bed

No mattress replacement needed

It reads through what you already own, which makes it the cheapest route into tracking for anyone happy with their bed.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is an under-mattress sensor?

Good at total sleep time and timing, weaker on sleep stages — which is true of every consumer tracker, worn or not. It infers from heart rate and movement rather than measuring brain activity. Read the trend across weeks, not the stage breakdown of one night.

Does it work if I share the bed?

It sits under one side and reads the person above it. A partner moving on the other side of the mattress can introduce noise, and a very firm or very thick mattress reduces the signal it can pick up.

Mat or a ring?

A ring is more accurate on heart-rate metrics because it reads from a finger. A mat is more accurate over time, because there is no night where you forgot to wear it. If your honest expectation is that you will get bored of a wearable, the mat is the better purchase.

Can it detect sleep apnea?

No. It reports breathing disturbances, which is a wellness observation and not a diagnosis. If you snore heavily, wake unrefreshed, or someone has seen you stop breathing, that is a reason to see a doctor rather than to buy any device.
